Not all asphalt shingles are created equal. Let’s look at the 3 main types of shingles, that are most common to the Mid-West and the optimal choice for homeowners. Each offers their own benefits, drawbacks, and unique look to a home.
3 Tab Shingles
Three Tab Shingles are used to describe the uniformed rectangle asphalt shingles. These may be the most common shingle found, but certainly not the most modern. They do not offer as good a wind protection, nor as good a warranty compared to dimensional shingles. They are a cheaper shingle and will typically be found on yard barns and storage sheds. A 3 Tab shingle can also be used for hip and ridge cap, along with being used as a starter strip.
Dimensional asphalt shingles are quickly becoming the #1 shingle in North America. Over the years technology has improved this shingle and now it’s a favorite among roofing installers. The GAF Timberline HD dimensional shingle comes with a 130 mph wind guarantee and a lifetime warranty. For most homeowners, the dimensional shingle is the obvious choice for a modern roof, with great irregular design. Like other shingles, the dimensional comes in a variety of color options to fit any style.
A Designer Shingle is typically much heavier than a dimensional and 3 Tab. This is due to their increased thickness and unique design. Extra care must be taken when installing a designer shingle, for both the decking, deck protection, and nailing of the shingle. Designer shingles are the top-shelf option for homeowners looking to spend extra money on a quality shingle and a unique look. A designer shingle is less common, mainly due to the increased cost of material and installation.
