roof iconFor many people, their home is the largest investment they have. We want to take care of our investment, by making sure it looks it’s best with quality siding, gutters that compliment it’s architecture, and the highest quality roof in the industry. Few things can damage the value of a home faster than a roof leak, so let’s find out what causes a roof to leak.

A big contributor to leaking roofs is improper installation. If the shingles were not installed properly or if flashing was not secure, leaks will form. That’s why it’s important to choose the right roofing contractor in Evansville, to protect your investment from the start!

Low quality materials are another factor in creating leaks in your roof. It’s not uncommon to have strong wind and storms in southern Indiana. Your shingles should be made to withstand adverse weather conditions, including the hot sun, hail, and rain. Chapman Construction considers the quality of materials used, that’s why we are a GAF Master Elite roofer, which uses GAF roofing shingles.

We don’t just do roof tear offs and installs, we also do roof repair. Because of our experience, we know that finding a leak can be difficult, so let’s look at some of the problem areas of your home. First, it’s going to be easier to find the leak, if it’s currently leaking, so it’s important to contact us as soon as the leak is discovered.

How To Locate A Roof Leak

Next, it’s time to get in your attic and see if we can find the exact point where it enters the home. This will also give us and you the opportunity to verify that it’s a roof leak at all. There are other water sources in the home, like condensation from HVAC units, and plumbing that can imitate a roof leak.

Once we have verified a roof leak, it’s important to measure approximate distance from fixed points in your home. To do this, use a tape measure to find the distance from an outside wall or fireplace, to the center of where the leak is entering through the attic. Having 2 points as a reference will help us locate the approximate entry point on the outside of the roof.

Now that we have measurements, we have a starting point to start searching for the leak outside. When on the roof, exercise extreme caution, and only perform the search if you are comfortable. Take the point measured out on the roof and start inspecting the area around this point. Note any damaged shingles, shingles that have been pried up, or flashing that may have moved. These are all potential areas for a leak to form. It’s also important to realize that the leak inside the attic may actually be from an open area further up the roof line.

Please do not attempt to locate or repair a roof leak, if you are not comfortable. Chapman Construction specializes in roof repairs and can assist with the entire process. Allow us to set your mind at ease and perform quality work, with quality materials, to protect your largest investment.
