Storm damage can greatly impact the life of your roof by accelerating granule lose and in some cases remove shingles. Read more below to know what to look for or when to call a roofing expert like Chapman Construction.
Hail around the size of 1.5 inches and bigger can cause significant roof damage to even new roofs, while even smaller hail with large volumes can cause damage to older roofs. The older a roof, the more it is vulnerable to hail damage. Less granules on a roof means more chances for deeper roof damage.
What to look for?
If you have access to your roof, look for small crater like divots in the shingles. The divots can range in sizes but the key to spotting hail hits is that they are not perfectly round but more of a oblong or imperfect oval shape. Perfect pinhole size damage is usually associated with blistering from excessive heat on the roof from either improper ventilation or multi layered roofs. Also, the best places to find signs of hail is soft metal flue caps or box vents. These soft metals can show dings and dents sustained from hail.
If you do not have access to the roof you can still check soft metals on ground level. Gutter downspouts, metal garage doors, and even landscaping stones can show signs of hail splashing. Hail splash isn’t always damage but it shows the impact of the hail. On walking stones you will see the hit marks from the hail. Another way to notice hail damage or general roof damage is granule loss. If you are noticing granules on your driveway or sidewalks this could be a sign of roof damage. With each hail hit the granules are knocked loose by the hit sending them in any direction. Gutters are a perfect place to check for excessive granule loss also.
Roof damage from wind can be easier to identify than hail damage. High winds can pull up shingles causing them to curl up or even be removed. Missing shingles are usually caused from wind damage assuming the installation was correct when the roof was installed. 3-tab style shingles have a wind rating of around 60 mph while Owens Corning Duration series shingle is rated to 130 mph. This added rating helps against high wind gusts especially on houses exposed near farm land or open fields.
While wind can pull the shingle up during the storm, sometimes the shingle can lay back down and partially reseal. Having your roof inspected by a trained roofing expert is key to ensure your roof is not damaged after a strong storm. We at Chapman Construction offer free inspections to help with any problems or concerns after a damaging storm. Our estimators are experts when it comes to storm damage and are happy to help with any questions you may have.
Proper roof ventilation is an integral part of a fully functioning roof system. Allowing your roof and
attic to breath Is beneficial in that it lowers energy costs and increases the longevity of your roofing
system. With correct ventilation you replace damaging warm moist air with fresh cool air keeping the
roof system at recommended temperatures.
It takes more than shingles to protect your home. Without proper ventilation, the shingle can begin to
break down or oxidizing at a faster rate due to higher temperature. High heat can also cause
blistering, cracking, and premature granule loss to any roof; and ventilation prevents this.
When heat is trapped it has to exhaust somewhere, so the hot air travels back down into the home
through the insulation making the building less energy efficient. Proper ventilation not only reduces
heat, it also reduces moisture buildup that can lead to ice damming, roof deterioration, and mold
